Pak Media Journalists Forum International Condemns PECA Act as a Severe Attack on Press Freedom

Report: Muhammad Amir Siddique Journalist Vienna Austria.Pak Media Journalists Forum International, the largest organization of overseas Pakistani journalists, held an online meeting to address the controversial PECA Act. The session was chaired by Chairman Chaudhry Noor-ul-Hassan Gujar, with President Dr. Abdul Rahman Usama presiding over the proceedings, while Acting General Secretary Shakeel Ahmed provided assistance. Over 50 members and officials from various countries participated in this significant meeting.

The session commenced with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Hafiz Irfan Khatana, who also had the honor of reciting a Na’at. Prominent journalists from Pakistan, including senior anchorpersons Dr. Umar Riaz Abbasi, Dr. Owais Rabbani, and Yasir Nazar, attended the meeting. They briefed participants on the potential implications of the PECA Act and the ongoing resistance against it in Pakistan. Questions from overseas journalists were addressed, and details regarding the strategies of journalistic organizations in Pakistan were shared.

The forum unanimously passed a resolution condemning the PECA Act, describing it as a blatant attack on press freedom, democracy, and the right to free expression. The resolution stated that this law is an unsuccessful attempt to silence journalists and contradicts democratic values. Participants urged the Government of Pakistan to immediately withdraw the controversial legislation and ensure the protection of press freedom.

 

The forum reiterated its commitment to continue its efforts for the protection of press freedom and declared its rejection of any restrictions on journalistic work. At the end of the session, all participants pledged their full support for safeguarding press freedom.

 

Prominent officials who attended the meeting included Chairman Chaudhry Noor-ul-Hassan Gujar from Saudi Arabia, President Dr. Abdul Rahman Usama from Russia, Senior Vice President Sheikh Ijaz Afzal and Additional General Secretary Shakeel Ahmed from the UK, Joint Secretary Imran Muzammil from Switzerland, Information Secretary Salman Luqman from Dubai, Finance Secretary Riaz Baloch from Austria, Executive Council Chairman Hafiz Irfan Khatana from Saudi Arabia, Vice Chairman Shaukat Goraya from Germany, Chapter Heads Ashfaq Anwar from South Africa, Asim Siddiqui from the United States, Muhammad Amir Siddique from Austria, Imran Muhammad from Hong Kong, Azmat Sahib from Canada, and Tanveer Irshad from Italy.

 

Other members who voiced their strong protest against the PECA Act included Kiran Khan from the UK, Atif Tanoli from Saudi Arabia, Rizwan Khan from Germany, Rizwan Bukhari from Turkey, Furqan Niazi from Italy, Hassan Butt from Saudi Arabia, Syed Faisal Ali Shah from the United States, Falak Sher from South Africa, and Sahibzada Atiq from France.

 

The session concluded with a special prayer for Pakistan’s stability and prosperity. Chairman Chaudhry Noor-ul-Hassan Gujar and President Dr. Abdul Rahman Usama expressed their gratitude to all officials, members, and guests for attending the meeting.
