Ambassador Kamran Akhtar presented his credentials as Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (Vienna) to Ms. Ghada Fathi Waly, Director-General of the United Nations Office/Executive Director of UNODC.
In a formal ceremony held at the United Nations Office in Vienna today, Ambassador Kamran expressed his commitment to strengthening the collaboration between Pakistan and UNODC. Ambassador Kamran and the Executive Director Ms. Waly had a detailed exchange of views on mutually beneficial long-standing partnership between Pakistan and UNODC.
Ambassador Kamran appreciated the ongoing cooperation between Pakistan and UNODC in the areas of countering illicit drug trafficking, transnational organized crime, border management, criminal justice system and legal reforms. The Ambassador also highlighted various measures taken by the government to fight drug trafficking, countering organized crime and terrorism and emphasized the need for continued support from UNODC and international partners to curb these menaces.
The Executive Director welcomed the Ambassador and acknowledged Pakistan’s critical role in fighting drugs and organized crime in the region and Pakistan’s notable contribution to the implementation of the UNODC counter-narcotics initiatives. She highlighted the strong partnership between UNODC and Pakistan and expressed confidence in further deepening this cooperation to achieve common goals.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is the main UN body on matters related to the global fight against drugs and transnational organized crime, which was established in 1997. The UNODC assists UN membership, inter alia, through its research and analytical work, providing normative support and technical advice and undertaking capacity-building initiatives. The Office maintains field presence in different regions of the world, including in Islamabad.
