Pakistan Leads Global Counter-Narcotics Efforts with Major Seizures and Calls for Enhanced International Cooperation to Combat Drug Trafficking.

Pakistan reaffirmed its strong commitment to global efforts against illicit drug trafficking and substance abuse during the 68th Session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) being held in Vienna. The Director General of the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF), leading the Pakistani delegation, delivered a statement highlighting Pakistan’s comprehensive approach to tackling the world drug problem through effective enforcement, international cooperation, and evidence-based prevention strategies

In his address, DG ANF underscored the strong link between sustainable development and the global drug problem, emphasizing that poverty, injustice, lack of opportunities, and social inequalities remain key drivers of drug abuse. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of its national development strategy, noting that a balanced approach combining supply and demand reduction, institutional capacity-building, and international collaboration is central to Pakistan’s counter-narcotics efforts.

Highlighting Pakistan’s significant progress against drug trafficking in 2024, DG (ANF) informed that Pakistan made seizure of 361 metric tons of narcotic drugs and precursor chemicals. executed 32 international intelligence-based operations leading to the arrest of 61 international drug traffickers with cooperation from global partners including US DEA, UK NCA, and CTF, and achieved a conviction rate of over 90 percent in drug-related prosecutions. Pakistan also took rigorous measures against illicit financial flows, freezing drug proceeds worth Rs. 4.5 billion and provided operational assistance to 16 partner countries in 235 inquiries.

Pakistan commended the efforts of UNODC and international partners while calling for enhanced cooperation in demand reduction, illicit financial flows control, advanced drug interdiction technologies, and capacity-building initiatives. The DG (ANF) reiterated that no country can combat the drug threat alone and urged for stronger international collaboration and resource mobilization to effectively counter the ever-evolving global narcotics trade.

The CND is the United Nations principal policy making body on drug control matters, which meets annually to formulate global drug policy and take scheduling decisions. During the week-long session, the Commission shall also consider resolutions on various new and emerging challenges.
